Description

Crispy and fluffy waffles filled with cinnamon-spiced caramelized apples, drizzled with a warm caramel glaze for a delicious dessert-inspired brunch treat.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups peeled and diced apples (Granny Smith recommended)
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for sautéing apples)
  • For the caramel glaze:
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. In a skillet, sauté the diced apples with brown sugar and 1 tablespoon of butter until soft and caramelized. Set aside to cool slightly.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon.
  3. In another bowl, whisk eggs, buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
  4. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Fold in the sautéed apples.
  5. Preheat your waffle iron and lightly grease it. Pour batter into the waffle iron and cook until golden brown and crisp.
  6. For the glaze, melt brown sugar and butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in heavy cream and a pinch of salt. Simmer for 2-3 minutes until thickened.
  7. Stack waffles and generously drizzle with warm caramel glaze. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Use tart apples like Granny Smith for the best contrast in flavor.
  • Do not overmix the batter to keep waffles light and fluffy.
  • Glaze can be made ahead and reheated before serving.
