Ingredients
Scale
Protein & Dairy
- 8 large eggs
- 1 pound beef sausage
- 1 1/2 cups whole milk or heavy cream
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
Produce & Pantry
- 1 package (30 oz) frozen shredded hash browns, thawed
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
Instructions
- Brown the Sausage: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the beef sausage until fully browned and crumbly. Drain excess grease and set the sausage aside.
- Prepare the Baking Dish: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Spread the thawed shredded hash browns evenly in the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish. Top the hash browns by scattering the browned beef sausage evenly, and then sprinkle 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese over the mixture.
- Mix the Egg Mixture: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk or heavy cream, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
- Combine Layers: Pour the egg mixture evenly over the layers of hash browns, sausage, and cheese in the baking dish. Make sure the liquid seeps down to reach all layers.
- Add Topping and Cover: Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of cheddar cheese evenly over the top of the casserole. Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil.
- Bake Covered: Place the covered dish in the preheated oven and bake for 45 minutes, allowing the casserole to cook through and the flavors to meld.
- Bake Uncovered: Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 15 to 20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown, bubbly, and the casserole is fully set.
- Rest and Serve: Let the casserole rest for at least 10 minutes before slicing to help it firm up for easier serving and better flavor.
Notes
- For a creamier texture, use heavy cream instead of milk.
- Substitute turkey sausage for a leaner option.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven or microwave.
- Adding diced onions or bell peppers to the sausage while browning can enhance flavor.
- Make sure hash browns are fully thawed to avoid excess moisture in the casserole.
