Scale
- 6 beef hot dogs
- 1/2 lb ground beef, seasoned and cooked
- 6 cheddar cheese sticks or slices
- 6 slices cooked bacon, crumbled
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup cornmeal
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 egg
- 3/4 cup buttermilk
- 1 tbsp yellow mustard (optional, for batter flavor)
- Wooden skewers
- Oil for deep frying
Instructions
- Insert skewers into each hot dog.
- Slit each hot dog down the middle lengthwise (not all the way through) and stuff with cheddar cheese and a spoonful of seasoned cooked beef. Press gently to seal.
- Sprinkle with crumbled bacon and gently press it into the meat and cheese.
- Freeze hot dogs for 15–20 minutes to help them hold together.
- Meanwhile, prepare the batter: In a bowl, whisk together flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- In another bowl, whisk egg, buttermilk, and mustard. Combine wet and dry ingredients to make a thick batter.
- Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
- Dip chilled hot dogs into the batter, coating completely.
- Fry 1–2 at a time until golden brown, about 3–4 minutes.
- Drain on paper towels and serve with ketchup, mustard, or your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes
- Freezing the stuffed hot dogs helps them keep their shape during frying.
- Use sharp cheddar for extra flavor contrast.
- Customize with pickles or jalapeños inside for added zing.
- Serve immediately for best texture and taste.
