Description

Donkey Balls are a savory and cheesy meatball appetizer made with ground beef, cheddar cheese, and a blend of spices. Perfectly baked to golden brown, these bite-sized treats are ideal for parties, game days, or casual snacks. Easy to make and highly customizable, they offer a flavorful and satisfying option to impress guests or enjoy at home.

Ingredients

Scale

Meatballs

  • 1 lb ground beef (or ground turkey)
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Optional Glaze

  • Ketchup (quantity as desired for brushing)
  • Worcestershire sauce (quantity as desired for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and facilitate easy cleanup.
  2. Mix Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, shredded cheddar cheese, breadcrumbs, egg, finely chopped onion, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well blended to ensure even flavor distribution.
  3. Form Meatballs: Roll the meat mixture into uniform 1-inch meatballs to ensure even cooking and place them on the prepared baking sheet with enough spacing between each.
  4. Bake Meatballs: Bake the meatballs in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until they are browned on the outside and cooked through. The internal temperature should reach 160°F (71°C) to ensure safety.
  5. Optional Glaze: For added flavor, during the last five minutes of baking, brush the meatballs with a mixture of ketchup and Worcestershire sauce. Return to the oven to let the glaze set and slightly caramelize.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground turkey for ground beef for a leaner option.
  • Adjust the amount of garlic powder and smoked paprika to match your taste preferences.
  • The breadcrumbs help to bind the meatballs and keep them tender.
  • If you prefer a gluten-free recipe, use gluten-free breadcrumbs.
  • Make sure not to overcrowd the baking sheet to allow even cooking.
  • Use a meat thermometer to check for doneness to avoid undercooked meatballs.
