Description

This Green Chile Cheeseburger is a bold and flavorful twist on the classic burger. Juicy beef patties are layered with melted cheese, roasted green chiles, and sautéed onions for a smoky-spicy kick. Paired with golden, crispy onion rings, it’s a satisfying meal that combines Southwest flavor with all-American comfort food.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Green Chile Cheeseburgers:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend for juiciness)
  • 4 roasted green chiles (Hatch preferred), peeled, seeded, and chopped
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced and sautéed
  • 4 slices American cheese (or cheddar/pepper jack for extra spice)
  • 2 burger buns, toasted
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • 1 tomato, sliced (optional)
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
  • 1 tbsp oil or butter for cooking

Onion Rings:

  • 2 large onions, sliced into thick rings
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup panko or plain breadcrumbs
  • Oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Onion Rings: Heat oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C). In a bowl, whisk flour, paprika, garlic powder, and salt. In another, mix buttermilk and egg. Dip onion rings in flour, then buttermilk mixture, then breadcrumbs. Fry until golden and crisp, about 3–4 minutes. Drain on paper towels.
  2. Cook the Burger Patties: Season beef with salt and pepper. Shape into 2 patties. Heat skillet or grill to medium-high, cook patties 3–4 minutes per side until done to preference. In the last minute, top with cheese to melt.
  3. Assemble the Burgers: Spread sautéed onions and chopped roasted green chiles over patties. Layer onto buns with lettuce (and tomato if desired).
  4. Plate & Serve: Serve the burgers hot with a side of crispy onion rings.
