Description

Honey Cinnamon Roll-Ups are a delightful dessert featuring flaky phyllo dough layered with a sweet and spiced walnut filling. These irresistible rolls are baked to a light golden brown and drizzled with a warm honey syrup, providing a perfect balance of crunch, warmth, and sweetness. Ideal for a cozy treat or special occasion dessert.

Ingredients

Scale

Walnut Filling

  • 2 cups ground walnuts, toasted
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Phyllo Dough Layers

  • 12 sheets frozen phyllo dough, thawed
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted

Syrup Topping

  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F to prepare for baking the roll-ups.
  2. Prepare Walnut Mixture: In a mixing bowl, combine the ground toasted walnuts, sugar, and ground cinnamon, blending all ingredients thoroughly for a spiced, sweet filling.
  3. Layer Phyllo Dough: Lay one sheet of thawed phyllo dough on a piece of waxed paper and brush it generously with melted butter. Place a second phyllo sheet on top and brush again with melted butter.
  4. Add Filling and Roll: Sprinkle 1/4 cup of the walnut mixture evenly over the top buttered sheet. Carefully roll the layered dough jelly-roll style tightly to encase the filling.
  5. Slice Rolls: Cut the rolled phyllo into 4 smaller roll-ups and transfer them to a greased baking dish, spacing them slightly apart. Repeat layering, filling, rolling, and cutting with remaining phyllo and walnut mixture.
  6. Bake the Rolls: Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for 14 to 16 minutes until the rolls are light brown and crispy.
  7. Cool the Rolls: Remove the rolls from the oven and allow them to cool on a wire rack to set and prevent sogginess.
  8. Prepare Syrup: In a small saucepan, combine honey, sugar, water, and lemon juice. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer gently for 5 minutes to create a syrup.
  9. Cool Syrup: Remove the syrup from heat and let it cool for 10 minutes until slightly thickened and warm.
  10. Serve: Drizzle the cooled honey syrup generously over the cooled roll-ups and sprinkle the remaining walnut mixture on top for added texture and flavor.

Notes

  • Serve these rolls warm or at room temperature for the best flavor and texture.
  • Add a dollop of whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for extra indulgence.
  • Ensure phyllo dough stays covered with a damp cloth while working to prevent drying out.
  • Use fresh toasted walnuts for enhanced crunch and aroma.
