Ingredients

Units Scale

Dry Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Other Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1/2 cup mixed dried fruits (raisins, candied orange peel, dried apricot, etc.)
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 2/3 cup whole milk (or heavy cream)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Set to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or use tall baking molds for a panettone-like shape.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Cut in butter: Add cold butter cubes and use fingertips or a pastry cutter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Add fruits & zest: Stir in dried fruits and orange zest.
  5. Make wet mixture: In another bowl, whisk milk, egg, and vanilla. Pour into dry ingredients and mix until just combined (do not overmix).
  6. Shape scones: Scoop dough into tall molds (or free-shape as rustic rounds).
  7. Bake: Place in oven and bake for 20–25 minutes (small molds) or up to 35 minutes if using taller molds, until golden and firm.
  8. Finish: Cool slightly, then dust generously with powdered sugar. Serve warm or at room temperature.
