Brownie Ingredients
- 1 stick unsalted butter
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 teaspoons coffee extract (or 1 tablespoon instant coffee)
- 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
Coffee Frosting Ingredients
- 1 1/2 teaspoons instant coffee granules
- 2–4 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
- 1/3 cup unsalted butter
- 2 cups powdered sugar
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease an 8-inch baking dish with non-stick spray or line it with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
- Melt Butter: In a microwave-safe bowl, melt 1 stick of unsalted butter until fully liquid, ensuring it is cool enough to mix with other ingredients.
- Mix Wet Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the melted butter, 1 cup granulated sugar, 2 eggs, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Mix thoroughly until the mixture is smooth and well blended.
- Combine Dry Ingredients: In another bowl, whisk together 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon baking powder. Gradually add this dry mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring gently until just combined without overmixing.
- Bake the Brownies: Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pan. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely before frosting.
- Prepare Coffee Mixture for Frosting: In a small bowl, dissolve 1 1/2 teaspoons instant coffee granules in 2 to 4 tablespoons of heavy whipping cream. Set aside to allow the coffee flavor to develop.
- Make the Frosting: Beat 1/3 cup unsalted butter in a large bowl until fluffy. Gradually add 2 cups powdered sugar, mixing continuously until smooth and creamy.
- Add Coffee Cream Mixture: Slowly incorporate the coffee and cream mixture into the frosting until it reaches your desired consistency and flavor intensity.
- Frost the Brownies: Spread the coffee frosting generously and evenly over the completely cooled brownies. Slice into 16 squares and serve.
Notes
- You can substitute coffee extract with instant coffee dissolved in a tablespoon of hot water for a richer coffee flavor.
- For a nutty twist, consider adding chopped walnuts or pecans to the brownie batter before baking.
- If you prefer a less sweet frosting, reduce the amount of powdered sugar gradually while mixing until the desired taste is achieved.
- Store brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for up to a week.
- To enhance the fudginess, do not overbake; check the brownies starting around 30 minutes.
