Description

This Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is a comforting and hearty dish that is perfect for a cozy family dinner. Juicy ground beef patties are smothered in a rich gravy and baked to perfection, creating a satisfying meal that everyone will love.

Ingredients

Scale

For the patties:

  • 2 lbs ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg (beaten)
  • 1 onion (diced)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the gravy:

  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Prepare the patties: In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, diced onion, salt, and pepper. Mix gently.
  2. Shape the patties: Form the mixture into 6–8 oval-shaped patties and let rest.
  3. Brown the patties: In an oven-safe skillet over medium heat, brown each patty for about 3–4 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  4. Prepare the gravy: Remove patties and set aside; in the same skillet, melt butter and sauté sliced onions until softened. Stir in flour; cook for about 2 minutes before whisking in beef broth and heavy cream until smooth.
  5. Combine and bake: Return patties to skillet, nestling them in the gravy. Cover tightly and bake at 350°F for 45 minutes; uncover and bake for an additional 15 minutes.

Notes

  • For a richer gravy, you can add a splash of Worcestershire sauce or a dash of soy sauce.
  • Serve this dish with mashed potatoes or buttered noodles for a classic comfort meal.
