Description

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day or any day with this moist and delicious Irish Soda Bread recipe passed down from my Great Grandmother. Perfect for tea time or as a side to a hearty stew!


Ingredients

Dry Ingredients:

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 TB baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda

Additional Ingredients:

  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 TB caraway seeds
  • 1 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 4 TB melted butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Coat pans with melted butter or oil and dust with flour.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and baking soda.
  3. Add Raisins and Seeds: Stir in raisins and caraway seeds using a fork.
  4. Blend Wet Ingredients: Mix in buttermilk and melted butter until evenly moistened.
  5. Bake: Transfer the dough into the pan(s), cut an X on top, and bake until a knife inserted comes out clean.

Notes

  • You can customize this bread by adding nuts or different dried fruits.
  • For a savory twist, omit the sugar and add herbs like rosemary or thyme.
